February - Big Ma Ma Thornton and The Grateful Dead 1967 [ Back to Gallery ]

Wow, what a striking combination and poster! I would have loved to been there and see this performance. What I love about this poster is the dramatic colors and graphic art - could not be better in my opinion.

To my knowledge this is the only poster that exists from this performance and was likely band generated. While some say the real party in San Francisco took place in 1966, it was really 1967 that set the stage for the culture revolution to take hold. Only a few short weeks from this performance, The Human Be-In would be held which became showcase of what the Summer of Love was going to bring to the City and around the world. Best of all, in January 1967, virtually all of the San Francisco bands were still considered locals that played for high school gym dances and roller rinks, very sad to see that change to large venues of stadiums and arenas. I know I have said it before, but posters like this one, just don't get much better in terms of graphic art!
